That was the last word Brian spoke to him. He died a week later. Luke went to the funeral, which was attended by only three other people, two of whom were members of staff from the care home. The other was an elderly woman who claimed to be an old friend of Brian's. Luke got the impression she'd hoped, many years ago, to marry him.

Two weeks later a solicitor informed Luke that his grandfather had bequeathed him a house in Huddersfield.

Luke was amazed. He'd assumed the house had been sold long ago, to pay the fees for Brian's care, but it seemed the old man had squirreled away enough cash for that.

The next day, as he was still trying to absorb the news, Luke received the results of his hospital tests, which he'd finally undergone just before his visit to Brian. They were inconclusive. In other words, nothing could be done.
